ASIA/TURKEY - The man who murdered Don Andrea Santoro has been wounded

Bodrum (Agenzia Fides) - Oguzhan Akdin, the 28-year-old man who in 2006 killed the Italian priest fidei donum don Andrea Santoro, was wounded, with his brother Alparslan Akdin, by gunshots following a fight with two people in Bodrum, the city where he settled after his release from prison in 2016. The Turkish police arrested two suspects after the attack. Oguzhan Akdin, accused of murder, spent 10 years in prison, after the murder of the 62-year-old Catholic priest in the church of Santa Maria in Trabzon, northwest of Turkey. Akdin, then a 16-year-old high school student, killed Santoro while he was praying, and was arrested a few hours later. According to Akdin's statements during the trial, the murder was due to religious reasons. The publication of cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten had aroused a wave of controversy all over the world, and the indignation had also spread in Turkey. Akdin was sentenced to 18 years and 10 months for premeditated murder in 2006, following a trial in which he reportedly expressed no regret. He was released in 2016 after the attempted coup in Turkey on July 15 of that year, as one of the 31.482 inmates released to make room to the tens of thousands arrested after the failed coup.
